Doti and Achham are two of the poorest districts in the poorest country in South Asia, Nepal. Situated in the remote far western part of the country, these districts are home to nearly half a million pople living on an average of $150 a year.
Over 60% of children are chronically malnourished, a rate unparalleled anywhere in the world. Eighty percent of the population is without access to safe water and sanitaion, and only 1 in 200 births take place in a hospital.
The bedrock of the rural economy agriculture, has failed to develop sufficiently over the pas two decades forcing many to look elsewher for there livelihood. As many as 80% of the households in Doti and Achham districts have a male member migrating seasonally to india for labor.
This large-scale migration has fueled an epidemic of HIV in this region. Studies of migrants returning to Doti and Achham from Indian cities have found 8-10% to be infected with HIV.
